Implementation without rejection: how modern medicine is created in Ukraine

We already wrote about the fact that in Ukraine they have shipped a new technology for the implant technology from titanium alloys.

Vitaliy K., a resident of the Kharkiv region, became one of the first patients who was operated on more than a year ago using an implant with an antibacterial coating. Vitaly’s chest was damaged by metastases, so Vostok-N engineers specially designed and manufactured an implant on the 3D printer to replace a chest defect.

“I just had a pain in my chest, was weak. In the district clinic, a common cold was diagnosed, but the treatment did not help. He took painkillers. If he hadn’t happened to be at the Institute of Surgery in Kharkiv, he probably wouldn’t have been alive”, – Vitaliy recalls the beginning of his illness.

The diagnosis sounded disappointing: a neoplasm in the right kidney with metastasis to the sternum. Vitaly’s condition worsened, bleeding suddenly opened. Doctors decided to do a double operation. In the practice of the Institute of General and Emergency Surgery, such an operation was carried out for the first time and lasted more than 5 hours.

New implant properties save lives

Vostok-N began producing implants for orthopedic operations with the antibacterial coating with the support of Ukrainian businessman, founder of the Renaissance Medico charity foundation Volodymir Manukyan.

“Our Ukrainian specialists can design and manufacture medical devices that meet European requirements, are not inferior to them in quality and, at the same time, are much cheaper,” businessman Volodymir Manukyan commented.

Similar antimicrobial coatings are indispensable in neurosurgery, dentistry, traumatology, cardiology. To fasten the chest today is the only worthy option, experts say. First of all, thanks to the unique coating, which contributes to the rapid healing and restoration.

The antimicrobial properties of titanium alloy implants accelerate the healing process

According to the surgeon Vasil Kritsak, the attending physician Vitaliy K., the antimicrobial coating with the silicon implant made it possible to avoid postoperative complications and suppurations: “Pain sensations were also minimal. Despite such a complicated operation, the patient spent only 12 days in the hospital”.

Surgeon Andryi Krasnoyruzhsky said that the decision had to be made quickly: “The patient was simultaneously removed from a kidney with a tumor and metastasis in the sternum. Due to the violation of the integrity of the chest frame in the postoperative period, there was a risk that the patient could not breathe on his own. Therefore, it was decided to develop and form an individual implant to replace a chest defect. The implant could take root almost immediately”.

Volodymir Manukyan, the founder of the Renaissance Medico charity foundation, is convinced that Ukrainian medical developments are able to cope with the implantology request: “Every day, dozens of people seek help because they are not able to cope with expensive surgeries and treatment abroad. In our country, there are also opportunities: medical developments, drugs, inventions. We help and will continue to support their development”.

The patented discovery is still not sent to mass production. Unfortunately, public funding bypasses modern know-how. Therefore, Ukrainian scientists and patients can only rely on the support of businessmen and charitable foundations.

“I didn’t even expect that I would leave the operation so quickly,” – Vitaliy K. said – “Pain sensations were insignificant, strength recovered, I felt great. I remember now this time, like a nightmare. And every day I thank the surgeons and specialists, and philanthropists, who made me a new chest. May God grant them health!”.
