British startup creates augmented reality automotive glass

The company plans to release a full-fledged product in 2025.

British start-up Envisics is developing an augmented reality system that will project holographic images onto the windshield – prompts will appear in front of the car, according to the company’s website.

Signposts on the windshield will point you to the right turns, points of interest such as pedestrians or cyclists on the road, free parking spaces, and mark your destination. The developed system can simulate visual effects that seem to be 20 meters in front of the car and to the very horizon.

The main innovation of Envisics is the use of a holographic modulator, which effectively traps light rays and allows you to simulate the movement of light in space. This will allow not only displaying 2D images on a plane, but creating a three-dimensional image on the car windshield.

At this stage, the system is already in use, but in a simplified version – so far it displays only some indicators, such as the speed of the car. Envisics notes that the “upgraded” version will be released in 2025.
