Laser-Doppler Anemometry (LDA) is an optic, therefore contactless procedure for velocity measurements in liquids. LDA enables the calibration of flow sensors. The developed procedure reduces the insecurity of the determination of the volume flow considerably and even under conditions where state-of-art solutions fail. The research institute is searching for licensees. Description A German research institute, specialized on metrology, has developed an improved solution for the calibration of flow sensors by means of Laser-Doppler Anemometry (LDA). During LDA two laser beams are overlapped. In the intersection a measuring range emerges where a visible fringe pattern is designed. Within this measuring range the flow velocity is recorded. For the application of LDA it is necessary to determine the interference fringe gap, the size and the position of the measuring volume. Until now the interference fringe gap could only be determined in a laboratory. A measuring method for the determination of the position didn't exist yet. Thanks to the new procedure these parameters can be recorded right at the measuring location. With help of a positioning system the laser beams are proceeded over a target - e.g. a marking on the optical access - and the light that is reveberated by the target, is detected. The beam trajectory of the interfering laser beams is reconstructed from the output of the back-scattered light and determines the interference fringe gap, the position, and the size of the measuring volume. The detection of the LDA-measuring volume is more precise than ever before and the calibration of the flow sensors can be realized despite high temperatures and high pressure. The research institute is searching for licensees intererested in products for the calibrations of flow sensor and to market them on the respective market to increase third party funding Advantages and Innovations The offered solution: - offers a measuring method for the determination of the position of the measuring volume. - reduces uncertainties of LDA measurements. - enabled calibrations of flow sensors at high temperature and high pressure. Stage of Development Field tested/evaluated IPR status: Patents granted Comments Regarding IPR Status The institute has a patent in Germany, the research institute plans to extend that upon demand.
