The largest yacht in the world will start scientific activities in 2022
REV Ocean is 183 meters long, which is three meters longer than the Azzam, which was previously considered the largest yacht in the world. In addition to its size, REV Ocean also surprises with functionality. Owner Kjellu Inge Rekke, who made his fortune from fishing and offshore drilling, decided to donate part of his fortune to saving the oceans. So he built something special: a hybrid ship that combines the luxury of a yacht and an ocean research laboratory.
Unsurprisingly, the REV Ocean is also the world’s largest exploration vessel. “She is almost twice the size of a typical research vessel”, – says Alex Rogers, a marine ecologist who left his teaching career at Oxford University to become the yacht’s scientific director. “We have a full range of scientific equipment as well as the deepest submersible in the world, which descends to 2,300 meters. There are three “wet” laboratories (where sample preparation is carried out, involving work with liquids) in biology, microbiology and geology, two “dry” laboratories (where analyzes are carried out using instruments) and a media laboratory, as well as equipment for extracting samples at a depth of 6 000 meters”.
For research work, the yacht can accommodate 54 scientists plus 36 crew members. As a charter, the yacht accommodates 28 guests in 14 cabins, as well as 54 crew members.
REV Ocean has three swimming pools, several common areas, a couple of dining rooms, observation decks, and on the scientific side, the yacht has a 35-seat auditorium, classrooms and an on-board medical facility.
At the moment, it is reported that the ship’s research will focus on three main issues: overfishing, climate change and ocean plastic pollution. Since the vessel can operate in two modes – “scientific” and “tourist” – the yacht owner is ready to apply a new business model, thanks to which the scientific staff will not pay for the stay on the yacht and the use of equipment, since all expenses will be covered by charter flights.
Rekke has invested about $ 350 million in the construction of REV Ocean. The businessman admits that his previous activities only contributed to the emergence of environmental problems. Therefore, now he wants to use his resources for a good cause.
The vessel is currently being outfitted and will be commissioned in 2022.
