American startup develops satellite collision avoidance system
Using data from the Department of Defense.
Kayhan Space, based in Boulder, Colorado, USA, announced on October 6 that it has closed a preliminary $ 600,000 fundraising round led by Atlanta-based venture capital firm Overline. Other participants in the round were Techstars and Dylan Taylor, writes mediasat.info.
The 10-member startup plans to use the funds received to continue the development of the so-called Kayhan Space satellite collision avoidance and assessment system, which will receive space-based orbital awareness data and provide satellite operators with improved and more efficient notifications of possible collisions between their satellites. with other satellites or their debris.
The Kayhan Space system will offer a “completely autonomous” approach to analyzing the data provided by the Department of Defense, as well as making decisions about the need for additional maneuver. Operators can step in and reverse the decision to maneuver, “however, the goal is to make the process completely autonomous”.
“The company’s platform helps space mission operators separate signal from noise and avoid wasting time and money on unnecessary maneuvers,” said Sean O’Brien, managing partner of Overline. “We believe that the Kayhan Space decision will play an important role in the future growth of the space economy”, – it was reported.
While the system will primarily use data from the Department of Defense, it will also be able to use other data sources, such as the operator’s own data on the location of its satellites, which may be more accurate than the data received from the Department of Defense. It will also be able to draw on data from a growing number of commercial companies collecting and providing data on the situation in space orbit.
Kayhan Space has already entered into preliminary agreements with two undisclosed clients. These two clients collectively operate about 20 satellites”, – said co-founder of the startup’s CTO Araz Feyzi. The company is also in talks with “one of the largest satellite operators”, which Kayhan Space hopes to officially announce in the near future.
