The TOP-5 winners of the competition of biomedical startups BioMedTech “Джерело інновацій” were established

Within the framework of the 29th international medical exhibition Public Health 2020, the final part of the First competition of biomedical startups BioMedTech Джерело інновацій was held.

As a Hubs correspondent reports, five startups reached the final of the competition, which were selected by a jury of well-known scientists and businessmen from among several dozen applicants throughout September 2020. The purpose of the competition: develop of the Ukrainian market for biomedical innovations that can improve methods of prevention, treatment, diagnosis of diseases, and improve the quality of healthcare.

The first place according to the results of the jury’s vote was taken by a start-up for the production of robotic artificial limbs with artificial intelligence. In general, the top 5 projects of the winners, depending on the points scored, took the following places:

1. Bionic robotic prosthetic arm Esper hand from Esper Bionics. Esper hand is the first IoT (Internet of Things) prosthesis with complex software developed using the Machine Learning approach (artificial intelligence). The development includes a set of sensors, the ability to filter signals and systematic update of grips and signal processing algorithms. It recognizes human activity and adjusts the grip to the appropriate situation, reduces training time, improves control accuracy and provides intuitive prosthesis control.

2. “Live” Geron Core cardio implants. An innovative development that will allow replacing artificial cardio implants with the so-called “live” ones – from the child’s own cells, their own “living” tissue for the implant is created.

3. Crunch.Tips hardware and software complex for the rehabilitation of injured limbs (Fison company). Crunch.Tips are attachments (sensors) for crutches that measure in real-time the load on the injured limbs of a patient undergoing rehabilitation. The patient is notified every time the load is too small or too heavy, and the doctor can review the progress of rehabilitation and make sure that the patient follows the recommendations regarding the nature of the load.

4. Medical Information System MedCenter+ – automation of medical care management processes. MIS “MedCenter+” unites in a single system the work of the contact center of the hospital, medical workers, doctors and commercial units; synchronizes information with the work of the site; analyzes information in depth in real-time; provides electronic document flow and control over all doctor’s prescriptions.

5. “Medical ECG calculator” of the “Vicom Med” medical diagnostic center. A medical ECG calculator is a heart health passport that is generated by automating an electrocardiogram (ECG) analysis. In particular, an analysis of the physiology of heart contractions is carried out – ECG-AFS. The algorithm allows you to assess the capabilities and readiness of the heart to perform life loads in a healthy or sick person.

The main prize for startups that took 1st and 2nd places is the presentation of the project at the international medical forum MEDICA in Dusseldorf (Germany) in November 2021 (a world-wide medical exhibition, travel expenses and participation in MEDICA are covered by the organizers of the competition).

A separate prize for 1 place is an acceleration program for the development of a startup. Also, the co-organizer – the organizing committee of the Public Health exhibition – at the next year’s exhibition will provide an opportunity for a free demonstration of the Esper hand bionic prosthesis-arm by Esper Bionics. The prize for 2nd place – a program for complex analysis of a startup (due diligence). Prizes for 3-5 places – training program “How to create a product from an idea and grow a successful business?”

“Джерело інновацій” in BioMedTech is organized by the Dzherelo Expo public association and Premier Expo, which have joined forces to help Ukrainian scientists, innovators and start-ups in the development and implementation of innovations.

Within the framework of the competition, Ukrainian start-ups are given the opportunity to obtain professional expertise and subsequently receive funding for projects with access to international markets. Inventors and teams of innovators (startups) who have promising and innovative technological developments/projects at the level of: idea, pre-seed, prototype or finished product are invited to participate. The organizers plan to start the next competition of biomedical startups BioMedTech “Джерело інновацій” from February 2021.

Public Association “Dzherelo Expo” is a non-entrepreneurial public association created to increase the competitiveness of Ukrainian products (works, services) in foreign markets, develop export competencies, promote Ukrainian goods, works and services abroad, provide assistance in establishing cooperation and partnership between Ukrainian and foreign business.

Public Health 2020 is the largest international medical exhibition in Ukraine, which took place in Kyiv from 7 to 9 October 2020. The organizer is DP “Premier Expo”. The exhibition featured 280 participants from 13 countries and 39 business and scientific events.
