Adidas, Stella McCartney and other brands invest in a startup that makes leather from mushrooms

The Bolt Threads project has developed an innovative material called Mylo. It is made from mycelium and looks like skin. The world-famous brands of sportswear Adidas and Lululemon, as well as the luxury segment – Kering and Stella McCartney have already begun to cooperate with the startup.

Bolt Threads will begin manufacturing the first mushroom skin products in 2021. Adidas, Lululemon, Kering and Stella McCartney have teamed up and started investing in the project, writes The New York Times.
How is Mylo made?

For the vegan Mylo material, mushroom roots are grown on a sawdust bed for 10 days. The material is warm, soft and very similar to real leather. The resulting material can be dyed and processed like natural leather. Moreover, this process is faster and more environmentally friendly than raising cattle.

The developers note that this industry remains an ecological time bomb and is full of outdated technologies.

“We had to convince competitors that we are talking about a joint solution of a more serious problem, which they cannot cope with alone. The fashion industry remains one of the most polluting industries in the world. By growing material from the mycelium, Bolt hopes to offset some of this environmental impact”, – said Bolt CEO Dan Widmeier.
