Healing asphalt. Israel launches a test road with wireless charging of electric cars

Tel Aviv-Jaffa Municipality has launched a pilot project to install wireless electric roads to charge public transport in Tel Aviv.

A pilot project, the first of its kind in Israel, including 600 meters of the electric road on a two-kilometer stretch between Tel Aviv University railway station and the terminal in Ramat Aviv.

The pilot project will allow specially-equipped electric buses to travel the route, which can be charged directly from the electrical infrastructure under the roads. Following the completion of testing around November, the Dan Bus Company will begin regular travel on the route, serving passengers traveling to Tel Aviv University.

The completion of an electric road to charge public transport vehicles will make Tel Aviv the first city in the world to widely use bus charging technology.

“We are constantly working to reduce air pollution in the city and our strategic action plan to prepare for climate change is very important for the municipality. We will evaluate, or a successful pilot project”, – said Ron Huldai, Tel Aviv Mayor.

If the pilot project in Tel Aviv proves to be successful, more such roads will be built, making it the first city in the world to widely adopt this technology.

Recall that back in 2016, a similar infrastructure project was commissioned in Normandy. According to experts, the volume of electricity produced by solar cells will be enough to fully supply a small town with a population of about 5 thousand people.

“Using road surfaces that convert sunlight energy into electricity saves land suitable for farming”, – French Minister of Environment, Sustainable Development and Energy Segolene Royal said during the opening ceremony.

So far, only one kilometer of this road has been sheathed with solar panels. The total area of the light-absorbing elements is 28 square meters. km.
