Ukrainian scientists received an Ig Nobel Prize in physics. They studied the effect of vibration on worms

This year, the Shnobel Prize Committee noted the research of Ukrainian scientists – physicist Ivan Maksimov and mathematician Andriy Pototsky. It is reported by “Ukrainian Truth”.

They studied the effects of vibrations on living earthworms. It turned out that worms react to vibrations like water drops. Read more about the study here.

The study’s description states that scientists tested the effects of vibration on four species of earthworms. As a result, they found out that vertical vibrations lead to the fact that subharmonic Faraday waves appear in worms (waves on the surface of a liquid that appear when the container vibrates).

This, in turn, can be explained by the fact that the worms have a hydrostatic skeleton with flexible skin and a body cavity filled mainly with fluid.

The Ig Nobel Prize, a parody of the Nobel Prize, has been handed out to scientists since 1991. She is noted for the most meaningless and ridiculous scientific research in the world. It is held under the motto: “We celebrate the achievements that make people laugh at first. And then they make you think”.

Among its laureates over the years: treating diseases with pizza, analysis of wombat square poop, the hypothesis that cats are liquid.
