Ministry of Education restores testing of universities and plans to actively cooperate with KPI

From August 1, the Ministry of Education will begin certification of Ukrainian universities. About this during a meeting with the leadership of the Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute was informed by the Acting Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine Sergiy Shkarlet.

The Ministry of Education temporarily stopped the certification of universities in November 2019. Then an additional set of independent experts was appointed, including international specialists, with increased requirements for candidates. Universities must pass certification at the beginning of 2020. Due to the quarantine, the process has slowed down.

According to the current standards, the attestation of universities is carried out every five years. Based on its results, budget funds are allocated for the basic financing of scientific activities. The best universities could receive UAH 100 million for basic research funding. Last year, the ministry proposed to quadruple this amount. This year, the MES will promulgate the final verification and funding rules.

Also, the head of the Ministry of Education and Science during his visit to the KPI noted the need for closer cooperation of the ministry with educational institutions of all levels. “Today we saw a keen interest of the ministry in our projects”, – says the Dean of the Faculty of Applied Mathematics, Dr. Tech. Sci., Professor, Member of the Administrative Council of the KPI Ivan Dichka.

The priority issue that the KPI and the Ministry of Education and Science will work on is defense capability. The ministry plans to join the project to develop the PolyITAN-3 nanosatellite, which will take photographs of the Earth and transmit data.

The head of the Ministry of Education and Science visited the World Data Center for Geoinformatics and Sustainable Development and noted that the government can cooperate with the Center to forecast development for the near future and make strategically important decisions, in particular in matters of economics and geopolitics.

Another important area of cooperation is joining the programs of the European Union. So, starting next year, the KPI will participate in the Horizon Europe program, which is aimed at funding scientific research and innovative developments. Participation in EU space projects is also planned.

“It is very important that the projects presented today are implemented in the country. This is the foundation on which education is based, and our students can use the acquired knowledge during their implementation”, – said Natalya Seminska, Vice-Rector for Teaching and Educational Work of the KPI.
