GeoStorm – a startup with Ukrainian roots working on accurate weather forecasts

GeoStorm Technology, with offices in Israel and Ukraine, is working on accurate weather forecasting technology. The startup team recently hit the MassChallenge accelerator in Boston and is working to attract investment.

AIN.UA editor talks about the project.

What does GeoStorm do?

GeoStorm Technology was founded in 2020. She separated from the Israeli developer of IoT solutions Carpe Diem Solutions with Ukrainian and Israeli founders. The founders of the company are Oleg Dryzhak, Gennady Zhuga and Andriy Semenyaka (the last two cofounders are senior researchers and specialists in radio electronics of the KNURE University). She has offices in Tel Aviv and R&D in Kharkiv, 13 people work in a team.

What are they working on?

The company operates in the field of forecasting and climate control. It is developing a technology that recognizes extreme weather events in real-time.

According to the developers, it does this with high accuracy: reading the meteorological speed + -0.1 m / s, the time for determining key parameters within one minute.

According to the company, in 2019 alone, climate change caused 409 natural disasters in the world, causing damage of $ 232 billion. Many large high-tech companies are interested in developing this area.

Google announced plans to launch technology with new AI models to instantly predict the weather; IBM announces the release of the IBM Weather Signals service, based on its Watson AI system for business planning.

As Oleg Dryzhak told AIN.UA, the company is developing and selling a DSP module (digital signal processing), with installed ALFA algorithms. Such modules are installed in radars that measure the weather of weather stations, ships, aviation services, etc.

Such algorithms provide:

  • screening of noises that prevent accurate reading of precipitation and wind speed (for example, interference from 5G towers and LTE);
  • fast processing of radar data;
  • determination of the exact area of the meteorological phenomenon: for example, the farmer, on the basis of such data, will understand which of his fields is threatened by hail and which is not.

“Weather forecasting is done by sophisticated computational models and supercomputers, where radar data is transmitted and processed up to 6 hours. We do it literally right away on the motherboard, making the radar upgrade to customers”, – explains the co-founder.

Data from these radars is processed by artificial intelligence systems, which the startup team is also working on.

What are you planning to earn?

According to the co-founder of the project, the company’s first earnings are the sale of DSP modules with algorithms that are integrated into the customer’s software and its supercomputers (if any).

The team submitted to participate in the MassChallenge accelerator, taking into account the results of its graduates: 89% were still active or made an exit, more than $ 6 billion of attracted investments, $ 3 billion of revenue.

“The goals that we set for the program period are: checking the value proposition and business model, developing sales and partnerships, attracting experts to the team,” says the co-founder.

Now the startup is conducting pilot tests of its technology with weather stations in Israel and Europe and the ClimaCell weather platform, as well as negotiations with radar manufacturers.
