В Україні створили прилад для вентиляції легенів, який допоможе врятувати хворих на коронавірус
– Unfortunately, Ukraine is facing a real threat of an epidemic caused by a coronavirus, which means that in the near future to save the lives of sick people in the country may need 10-12 thousand units of artificial ventilation, – says Associate Professor of National Aviation University Olexiy Olefir. – Therefore, under the guidance of Assistant Professor of our university Hanna Schegel, we quickly created our own model of such apparatus, serial production of which can be adjusted in just two to three weeks.
The device is designed by the type of breathing apparatus used by bombers of WWII for high altitude flying. In addition, we used our latest developments – biologically active composite materials. Last year, at one of the exhibitions in Kyiv, we demonstrated a device for the treatment of burn wounds in the field “Malfarque”. It was created at the department of mechanics of our university by a group of professors Vyacheslav Astanin. In short, the biologically active composite disinfects the air, which burns burn wounds. In our ventilation apparatus, disinfected air is supplied to the lungs of patients. We called this system “Malfarque-corona”.
– Have you involved any doctors in the development of this unit?
– Yes. Olga Khomich, Assistant Professor at Bogomolets National Medical University, is in our team. The system is clearly designed to supply and exhaust air at a given pressure and in the required volume.
We offered to express our opinion about our system to the doctors of one of the elite clinics. The first reaction was skepticism. However, a few hours later, the doctors called us to ask: “Give us one or two of your devices”. And the next morning they asked for five pieces. But the unit still exists in a single copy.
There is an administrative problem with its serial production and use – it is not certified. All paperwork may take a year or even longer to complete. In the situation with the coronavirus epidemic, there is no way to wait so long. Therefore, we need to give us the opportunity to debug these devices without certification.
We say we have created a last-chance system for saving lives. It is as simple as possible – the current modification is not automatic, it must be actuated manually. But if you need to save a loved one, you will sit next to him and manually ventilate his lungs with our system.
– How much money will it take to establish mass production?
– We do not need as much finance as our production facilities, equipped with equipment for casting polymers and manufacturing of polymer and rubber masks, machines for welding stainless steel parts, machine tools …
– What will be the cost of such systems at mass release?
– UAH 1-2 thousand per one. Later, when you upgrade them with motors, different sensors, the price will increase.
– How much did the installation cost?
– We didn’t count. Everything was done at our own expense. We didn’t need a lot of money because we worked for free. Our staff consists of staff and students of the university, as well as students of Kyiv school № 159, led by computer science teacher Valentyna Olefir.
