Major US retailers have launched a design competition called Beyond the Bag Challenge. His goal is to develop an eco-friendly alternative to the conventional plastic bag. Business Insider reports.
Competition organizers include Target, Walmart, CVS, and other American retailers. Ideas will begin to be accepted from August 3.
What are the expectations of the participants?
Competitors are expected to develop a solution to which such requirements are put forward:
- it can include innovative materials, models based on recyclable materials, solutions that make it possible to do without bags;
- the solution should make it possible to transport goods from the store to the final destination, replace the traditional plastic bag;
- decisions may concern points of issue of goods, delivery operations and other delivery channels of goods to the buyer.
- for the first phase of the project, it will be enough to provide a presentation of your solution (2D / 3D graphics), however, a more developed prototype will increase the chances of winning.
More detailed requirements for solutions can be found in the brief on the competition website.
Conditions of the competition
Now the preparatory stage of the competition is underway, the works will begin to be accepted from August 3 to September 10 this year. Authors of works can choose whether to post their projects publicly, or to private access. On September 24, projects will begin to be evaluated, and the winners will be announced on November 24, 2020.
The work of teams from all over the world is accepted, however, in the work you need to focus on technologies and methods certified either in the USA or in the country of residence of the designer (but with an eye to certification in the USA).
As a result of the competition, the organizers will select 10-12 finalists, each of them will be paid up to $ 100,000.
About 100 billion plastic bags are used each year in the US, and less than 10% of them are recycled, according to Waste Management and the EPA. This waste does not only pollute land, plastic bags from stores are among the top ten things that can be found on the ocean shore.
