Elon Musk’s startup showed the work of neurointerfaces on a pig

Elon Musk, a neurotechnological startup Neuralink, showed the work of neurointerfaces on a pig, using an implant to read the activity of neurons in his brain from all channels.

The Verge writes about this with a link to a presentation that took place on the company’s YouTube channel.

The publication notes that this is not the first such device of the company, the design has changed a lot since last year, so it is not visible on the animal. The device itself has become much more compact, its size is 23×8 mm. It is now shaped like a coin and designed to fit flush with the skull under the skin.

The developers have reduced the number of electrodes used by three times – from 3072 to 1024. The device is charged overnight using magnetic charging. For data exchange in the new generation, a wireless interface is already used, and not USB-C. The working radius is 5-10 meters.

The publication notes that Neuralink did not invent brain-computer interfaces – they have existed and have been implanted in humans since 2006. The company’s main contribution to the technology is thin flexible wires covered with electrodes for recording brain activity.

The filaments have more electrodes than other systems. That is, their bandwidth is much higher. In addition, they do not cause such serious damage as stiff needles. However, foreign objects in the brain are destroyed over time, and smaller ones are destroyed faster.
