Download everything. Engineers set a new internet speed record

Scientists have developed a new way to modulate the sweet light on fiber optic cable, which has made it possible to break the record for information transmission speed. The maximum performance reached over 22 terabytes per second.

Fiber optic cable remains the fastest way to transfer digital data. Recently, engineers from the UK and Japan have figured out how to make it even faster.

“While today’s cloud data center interconnects are capable of up to 35 Tbps, we are working with new technologies that make better use of existing infrastructure, improving the use of fiber bandwidth and setting a new world record for data rates”, – declare the authors of the discovery.

This development is based on the technology of scientists from University College London, who “changed the phase, brightness and polarization of wavelengths to fit more information into the light flux, without mixing waves of different wavelengths”.

Engineers are announcing a new hybrid light modulation technology that activates even before the light hits the optical fiber. This allows you to significantly expand the bandwidth and increase the speed of information transfer.

Previous records were set at 44 Tbps and 150 Tbps for some experimental devices.

The technology of scientists from the UK and Japan has made it possible to achieve information transfer rates of 178 Tbit / s, which is equivalent to 22.25 terabytes per second or 22,250 gigabytes per second.

This figure is tens of thousands of times higher than the maximum fiber-optic connection speed available to users in some countries.

The advantage of the new technology is that for implementation, engineers will not need to change the entire infrastructure of fiber optic cables – it is enough just to upgrade the signal amplifiers, which are installed every 40-100 km.
